Creating and Managing Presentation Templates

Written by Jim Rutherford

Templates let you turn any presentation into a design template that your whole company can build from. Once a presentation is a template, its pages are available whenever someone adds pages to a presentation, under Add Page > My Templates. You can make a presentation a template, or stop it being one, right from your presentation library.

Why Use Templates?

Build new presentations from approved pages

Turn your best-designed presentation into a template, and everyone in your company can add its pages to their own presentations. Instead of copying pages by hand or starting from a blank page, reps start from layouts your team has already approved.

Keep templates up to date in one place

A template is your original presentation, not a copy. When you edit and publish the presentation, the updated pages are what people get the next time they add pages from it. You can, for example, refresh your pricing page once and every new presentation picks up the change.

Manage templates without leaving your library

Making, removing and deleting templates all happen from the menus you already use. There is nothing to set up first: every company already has a template space.

Step 1: Make a Presentation a Template

  1. Open your presentation library and select thentation.

  2. Click the … (More) button on the presentation's tile.

  3. Click Make Template.

  4. A New Template message confirms that the presentation is now a template. Click OK.

The presentation stays in its team as before. It is now also available as a template.

Step 2: Add Pages from a Template

  1. Open a presentation for editing.

  2. Click Add Page.

  3. In the left column, click My Templates.

  4. Choose a template from the Templates list.

  5. Select the pages you want, then click Add Page.

Only templates with the same page shape as your presentation are listed. For example, a widescreen (16:9) presentation shows widescreen templates.

Step 3: Remove a Template

You can stop a presentation being a template from the Add Page screen.

From your presentation library:

  1. Click the … (More) button on the presentation

  2. Click Remove Template.

The presentation stays in its team. It is just no longer offered as a template.

From the Add Page screen:

  1. In Add Page, click My Templates.

  2. Right-click the template in the Templates list

  3. Click Remove Template.

  • If the presentation is also in one of your template only. The presentation itself is kept.

  • If the presentation exists only as a template, removing it deletes the presentation. You are asked to confirm before anything is deleted.

FAQ

Is a template a copy of my presentation?

No. A template is your original presentation, made available as a template. Edits to the presentation are reflected in the template once you publish them.

Where do my templates appear?

In Add Page > My Templates, while you are editing a presentation.

Why don't I see Make Template in the … menu?

Your role may not include permission to manage templates. Ask your admin about your role.

Why isn't my template listed in My Templates?

Check that the presentation is published and that its page shape matches the presentation you are adding pages to.

Why did removing a template ask me to delete it?

That presentation existed only as a template. Removing it as a template would leave nobody able to reach it, so it is deleted instead, after you confirm.

Do my coworkers see my templates?

Yes. Templates are shared across your company, so anyone adding pages can use them.
